You can log into Path of Exile 2, select the character, clear maps, change gear, gain experience, and play normally. Then you open a character listing or build page and the character simply is not there.
That feels like an account problem. Most of the time, it is not.
A Path of Exile 2 character can exist perfectly normally on Grinding Gear Games’ servers while remaining invisible to poe.ninja or another service that depends on ladder and account data. The important question is therefore not “Where did my character go?” but “Which data source is supposed to make this character visible?”
Once you make that distinction, the problem becomes much easier to diagnose.
Short Answer
If your Path of Exile 2 character is not listed on poe.ninja, the most common reason is that it has not entered the dataset being used for the Builds section.
poe.ninja explains in its own PoE 2 character listing documentation that its system uses Path of Exile’s ladder API, which contains the leading characters on the relevant ladder. That means merely creating a character does not automatically guarantee that it will appear in the public build database.
The situation is more flexible than it was during the earliest months of PoE 2, however. poe.ninja later added account connection through Grinding Gear Games’ OAuth character APIs, creating another way for sufficiently levelled characters to be included even when they are not on the game’s main ladder.
So a missing character generally points to one of these situations:

The last point causes more confusion than it deserves.
First Check the Actual Path of Exile 2 Ladder
Before changing privacy settings, unlinking accounts, or assuming something is broken, check whether your character realistically qualifies for the ladder data being indexed.
Grinding Gear Games provides the official Path of Exile 2 ladders.
Select the league your character actually belongs to and look toward the bottom of the available ladder. The characters there give you a practical indication of the experience and level currently needed to appear.
This is better than searching for a universal answer such as:
“What level do I need for poe.ninja?”
There may not be one permanent number.
A ladder is competitive data. As the league progresses and thousands of players gain experience, the effective entry point can move. A level that was enough earlier in a league may no longer put a character inside the same visible range later.
That is why poe.ninja itself directs players toward the current ladder rather than publishing one permanent level requirement.
Think of the listing as a moving window
This is the easiest mental model.
Imagine there are far more active PoE 2 characters than can reasonably be represented in one competitive ladder dataset.
Your character might be progressing like this:
Level 70 → Level 78 → Level 84 → Level 89
Nothing is wrong at any point.
But if the lowest characters currently represented in the relevant dataset are considerably further ahead, your character can remain absent until it reaches the range being collected.
Being unlisted is therefore not evidence that your character has been deleted, corrupted, or disconnected from your account.
poe.ninja Is Reading Data, Not Watching Your Game Client
This distinction matters.
poe.ninja does not sit inside your game client watching your character every time you equip an item.
Services such as poe.ninja depend on information made available through Grinding Gear Games’ web infrastructure and APIs. GGG’s official Path of Exile developer documentation describes its API resources as snapshots of data stored on the game’s servers and explains how OAuth is used to give authorized applications controlled access to account information.
That creates several stages between:
“I changed my character”
and:
“The public build page shows that change.”
Your character may need to:
- qualify for the relevant dataset,
- be accessible through the appropriate account or API route,
- be collected by poe.ninja,
- be processed into the Builds database,
- appear during a later site refresh.
Those are different events.
This explains one of the strangest experiences players have: the character is visible somewhere on the site but does not immediately appear where they expect it in Builds.
Connecting Your Account Can Help
poe.ninja introduced OAuth account connection for PoE 2 after Grinding Gear Games made the relevant character APIs available.
According to poe.ninja’s announcement explaining its PoE 2 account and character features, connecting an account can allow a sufficiently high-level character to enter the Builds section even when that character is not present on the game’s ladder.
This is an important change because it means:
ladder position is no longer the only possible route into poe.ninja’s character system.
You can sign into the poe.ninja account area and check the characters associated with your connected account.
If the character appears there, you have already learned something useful. The character is visible through the account connection even if it has not yet appeared in the public Builds results.
Do not immediately disconnect and reconnect everything simply because Builds has not updated. Check the character itself first.
A Character Can Be Visible to Your Account but Missing From Builds
This is where the current system becomes slightly unintuitive.
There are really two questions:
Can poe.ninja see the character?
and:
Has poe.ninja included the character in the public Builds dataset?
Those are not necessarily the same thing.
poe.ninja has stated that its account page can display connected characters and allow individual character refreshes. It also notes that character links may be shareable even when the character is not on a leaderboard. Builds updates occur periodically rather than continuously.
So if you can see the character in your account area but cannot find it through normal Builds searches, that does not automatically mean the account connection failed.
The account page is the better place to investigate first.
Do Not Expect an Instant Refresh
Suppose you replace half your equipment, gain several levels and change your passive setup.
You open poe.ninja thirty seconds later.
The old version is still there.
That is normal behavior for a snapshot-based site.
poe.ninja has said that its Builds section updates on a periodic cycle rather than reflecting every character change instantly. Its account tools can also be used to refresh characters for subsequent updates.
This means refreshing your browser repeatedly is not the same thing as refreshing the underlying character data.
Your browser can reload the page ten times while the server still has the same previously collected snapshot.
Recent changes that may take time to appear include
- newly equipped items
- passive tree changes
- newly allocated ascendancy choices
- gem changes
- character levels
- major build respecs
- newly connected characters
If the character was working previously and you only care about recent build changes, indexing delay is a much more reasonable first suspect than an account failure.
Make Sure You Are Looking at the Correct League
This sounds embarrassingly simple until it happens to you.
A character belongs to a specific league or ruleset. poe.ninja organizes build data accordingly.
If you search one league while your character belongs to another, the character will not suddenly cross over simply because the account name is correct.
For example, imagine you have:
Character: ColdInvoker
League: Current temporary league
but your Builds page is displaying:
Standard
Searching harder will not solve the problem. You are asking the site to search a dataset that does not contain that character.
Whenever a character disappears, check the league selector before changing anything else.
This is especially worth doing around league transitions, migrations, new league launches, or after returning to a character you have not played recently.
Check Your Sub-Account Before Blaming poe.ninja
Path of Exile’s modern account structure introduced another source of confusion: sub-accounts.
Grinding Gear Games changed its account system in preparation for Path of Exile 2, cross-play, and shared account functionality. Its official explanation of Path of Exile account and sub-account changes specifically notes that some players may have multiple accessible sub-accounts and may need to select the correct one to find their characters.
This matters particularly if you have played through combinations such as:
- Steam
- the standalone client
- Epic Games
- Xbox
- PlayStation
You can be correctly logged into your overall account while still looking at the wrong sub-account.
That produces a very convincing illusion:
The account works, but my character has vanished.
In reality, you may simply be standing in the wrong branch of the account structure.
If the characters shown online do not resemble the characters you see when playing, check the account and sub-account selection before touching anything else.
Make Sure You Are Using the PoE 2 Website
There is another trap left over from Path of Exile’s long history.
The original Path of Exile website and the newer Path of Exile 2 account interface do not always present character information in the same place.
As recently as March 2026, players were still reporting that they could see only their PoE 1 characters when checking the older website. Other users directed them to the Path of Exile 2 account interface instead.
For PoE 2 account information, use the official Path of Exile 2 account overview.
This is an important diagnostic step.
If your PoE 2 character appears on the official PoE 2 account side but not on poe.ninja, your problem is probably no longer:
“Does GGG know this character exists?”
Instead, it becomes:
“Why hasn’t this third-party listing included or updated it?”
That is a much smaller problem.
Privacy Can Affect What Third-Party Services Can Show
Account visibility is also worth checking, particularly if you expect your character or profile to be publicly shareable.
There are multiple layers here, so avoid the common assumption that “public account” automatically means “listed everywhere.”
A public profile may make information accessible, but a third-party service still decides what it collects, how often it refreshes, which characters qualify, and where they appear.
Likewise, OAuth authorization creates controlled access between your account and an approved application. GGG explains that OAuth lets users determine what account information an application is permitted to access.
poe.ninja also provides its own account-level controls. It has stated that users can disable public-profile behavior or exclude characters from future Builds snapshots through account settings.
So if one particular character stubbornly refuses to appear, check both sides of the relationship rather than assuming one global privacy checkbox controls everything.
What If You Renamed the Character?
A rename introduces a different problem.
Public character pages depend on identifiers that include character information. If you have an old bookmarked link using the previous character name, that URL may no longer represent the current character location.
This is especially easy to misinterpret because an old page can look like evidence that the character has vanished.
If you recently renamed the character:
- open your connected account rather than the old bookmark,
- refresh the account’s character list,
- find the character under its new name,
- use the newly generated character page.
Treat an old character URL as disposable after a rename.
The account itself is the stronger reference point.
What If the Page Says “Character Not Found”?
“Not found” sounds much more serious than it often is.
A character URL can fail because:
- the character name changed,
- the character was deleted,
- the stored URL is outdated,
- the character is no longer available through the same dataset,
- the account visibility changed,
- the current snapshot no longer contains that character.
The message therefore describes the page lookup. It does not necessarily diagnose the state of your actual PoE 2 account.
Open the game.
If the character is still selectable and playable, the character obviously still exists.
Then open your official account and your connected poe.ninja account rather than repeatedly testing the dead URL.
A Better Troubleshooting Order
Most players troubleshoot this backwards.
They start unlinking accounts, changing privacy options and searching forums before establishing the simplest facts.
Use this order instead.
1. Confirm the character exists in game
Log into Path of Exile 2 and select the character.
If you can play it normally, you are dealing with a visibility or indexing problem rather than a missing game character.
2. Confirm the league
Look at the character’s league and compare it with the league currently selected on the listing site.
3. Check the official ladder
Use the official PoE 2 ladder and inspect the lower end of the relevant league.
If your character is outside the competitive range, ladder-based absence is expected.
4. Check your connected poe.ninja account
See whether the character appears in your account-level character list.
If it does, try the available character refresh functionality rather than repeatedly refreshing your browser.
5. Check the correct GGG sub-account
If several platform accounts have been linked or merged, verify that the character belongs to the sub-account you are currently viewing.
6. Use the PoE 2 account site
Do not rely solely on the older Path of Exile account character page when checking a PoE 2 character.
7. Allow time for indexing
A character refresh and a Builds database update are not necessarily instantaneous.
8. Escalate only when the official account is wrong
If the character exists in game but cannot be found through the correct official account or sub-account, that is the point where the problem starts looking like an account issue rather than ordinary poe.ninja indexing.
Grinding Gear Games maintains an official Path of Exile 2 support centre for character, account, technical and gameplay issues.
What You Should Not Do
A missing listing can make people start changing everything at once.
That usually makes diagnosis harder.
Do not immediately:
- unlink Steam from your account,
- create another Path of Exile account,
- delete and recreate the character,
- repeatedly change privacy settings,
- assume your build has been intentionally excluded,
- repeatedly reconnect OAuth without checking the existing account,
- use an old PoE 1 character page as proof that your PoE 2 character is missing.
Change one thing only when you know what that change is supposed to test.
The goal is to identify where the visibility chain breaks.
The Visibility Chain
The cleanest way to understand the entire problem is to picture your character moving through several layers:
Your PoE 2 character
↓
Grinding Gear Games account
↓
Correct sub-account
↓
League and ladder or OAuth character data
↓
poe.ninja collection
↓
Builds processing
↓
Public character page
A failure near the bottom does not mean something failed at the top.
That is why seeing your character in game but not seeing it on poe.ninja is completely possible.
Your character and its public listing are two different things.
When the Missing Listing Is Actually Worth Worrying About
There is one distinction I would use before spending much time troubleshooting.
If the character is missing only from poe.ninja, treat it as a data visibility problem first.
If the character is missing inside Path of Exile 2 itself, that is different.
Likewise, if:
- your correct PoE 2 account no longer shows the character,
- you cannot find the expected sub-account,
- your platform account appears connected to the wrong GGG account,
- several characters disappear simultaneously from official account tools,
then third-party indexing is no longer the main suspect.
At that point, use GGG’s official account and support tools rather than trying to repair the problem from poe.ninja.
Closing Thoughts
A Path of Exile 2 character not appearing on poe.ninja looks more dramatic than it usually is.
The site is not a mirror of every character currently sitting on Grinding Gear Games’ servers. It is a processed view built from ladder information, authorized account data and periodic snapshots. A character can therefore be completely healthy while sitting outside the public Builds database.
Start with the league and official ladder. Then check the connected account, correct sub-account and PoE 2 account page. After that, give the indexing system a chance to refresh.
The most useful rule is simple:
If you can still log into the character and play it, do not treat a missing public listing as a missing character.
Treat it as a visibility problem until the evidence says otherwise.
