What Is PoE Ninja?

poe.ninja Analytics platform · third party · free

1.

A free, independently built website that tracks prices and character builds in Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2. It reads public data the games publish, then organises it into economy overviews showing what items sell for, and build overviews showing what top ladder players are running.

It is not a game, not a marketplace, and not made by Grinding Gear Games.

The problem it exists to solve

Path of Exile has no shops, no fixed prices and no auction house. Everything an item is worth is worth because another player will pay it, and that consensus moves constantly — sometimes within hours of a league starting, sometimes within minutes of a patch note landing.

That leaves a genuine problem. Before you can trade sensibly you need to know roughly what things go for, and there is no official source that tells you. The same applies to builds: the game gives you a passive tree with over a thousand nodes and no indication which combinations actually work.

Both problems have the same shape. The information exists, scattered across thousands of players, and nothing in the game gathers it up for you.

That gathering is what the platform does. It reads what players have listed for sale and what the highest-ranked characters are running, then presents both as something you can read in a few seconds instead of reconstructing yourself.

What is actually on it

The exact sections change as the games change, but they fall into a few consistent groups. Whichever version you land on, you are looking at one of these.

Currency and exchange rates

What each orb trades for against the others, which is the backbone every other price on the site is expressed in.

Unique items

Named items with fixed properties, priced individually. Variants, corruptions and roll ranges are usually listed separately because they are separately valued.

Cards, fragments and crafting materials

Divination cards, map fragments, essences, scarabs and the rest of the consumable economy, each with its own overview.

Build overviews

Characters from the ladder, filterable by class, ascendancy, main skill, keystone or equipped unique, with their trees and gear visible.

Historical graphs

How a price has moved across the league so far, which tells you where something has been rather than where it is going.

Character export

Any listed character can be exported as a code and opened in Path of Building, which is where its damage and defences can actually be examined.

Where the numbers come from

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the part that determines what you can trust. The economy data and the build data come from two entirely different sources, with different coverage and different blind spots. Treating them as one thing is where most misreadings begin.

Economy data
Source
The public stash tab API, which publishes every item a player has put in a tab marked for sale.
Sees
Asking prices. What sellers have listed things for, not what buyers actually paid.
Processing
Price-fixed listings and statistical outliers are stripped out, and what remains is reduced to one representative value.
Blind spot
Anything traded privately, in bulk off-platform, or never listed at all. Thinly listed items produce unreliable values.
Build data
Source
The official ladder API, which returns ranked characters for each league.
Sees
High-ranked characters only. Class, ascendancy, tree, gems and equipped items for those it returns.
Processing
Characters are grouped by skill and ascendancy to produce the popularity figures shown on overviews.
Blind spot
A hard cap of 15,000 entries in Path of Exile and 1,000 in Path of Exile 2. Everyone below that is never returned.

Those caps come from Grinding Gear Games' own developer documentation, not from a choice any tracker made. No third-party tool can see past them, which is why the overwhelming majority of characters never appear in a build overview anywhere.

What it costs and what it wants from you

Nothing, and nothing. There is no account, no login, no download and no paid tier. You open a page and read it.

That matters more than it sounds, because a great many sites in this space do want something — an account link, an API key, a launcher install. Nothing that only reads public data needs your credentials to do it. If a site claims otherwise, that claim is the thing to examine, not the feature it is attached to.

Who built it

It is an independent community project rather than a company product, and it is not made by, run by or endorsed by Grinding Gear Games. GGG make the games and publish the data; the platform reads that data and organises it. Those are two separate things done by two separate parties.

Untangling the similar names

Three names in this space look alike and get confused constantly, including on this site, whose own domain is close enough to warrant saying so plainly.

If you need current prices or ladder builds, you want poe.ninja. If you need help with your account or the game, you want Grinding Gear Games. This site explains how to read what you find on the first one.

What it cannot do

Knowing the limits is most of knowing how to use it. Five things it is not built to handle, none of which are faults.

  • It cannot process a trade. It is a reference. Buying and selling still happens through the official trade site or in game.
  • It cannot predict a price. Every figure and graph describes the past. Nothing on the page carries information about what happens next.
  • It cannot see most players. The ladder cap means the visible sample is the top of the game, not a cross-section of it.
  • It cannot tell you what something sold for. The stash data is asking prices. A listing that nobody buys still counts toward the figure.
  • It cannot judge a build. Popularity is a count of what people are running, and a count is not a recommendation.

Common questions

Is PoE Ninja safe to use?
It reads only public data and asks for no account, no login and no download, so there is nothing to hand over. As with anything, type the address yourself rather than following a link from a whisper, since similar-looking domains exist in this space.
Is it official?
No. It is an independent community project. Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 are made by Grinding Gear Games, who publish the data it reads but do not run it.
Why do the prices keep changing?
Both games run fully player-driven economies with no fixed prices. Values are recalculated continuously from live listings, so a supply shift, a balance change or a new crafting method can move a price within hours. That is the economy working, not the tracker failing.
Why is my character not in the build overview?
Almost always the rank cap. Ladders return only the top 15,000 entries in Path of Exile and 1,000 in Path of Exile 2, and characters below that are never published. Private account settings and recent renames are the other two common causes.
Can I buy or sell on it?
No. Nothing changes hands on the platform. You read a value there, then trade through the official trade site or directly in game.
Why does Standard show completely different prices?
Every challenge league starts its economy from zero. Standard reflects years of accumulated wealth while a fresh league reflects only the current season, so the two are never directly comparable. Always confirm which league is selected first.

Where to go next

Knowing what it is gets you to the front page. Knowing how to read it without being misled by a confident-looking number is the harder half.
