The character listing is where the meta stops being a chart and becomes real characters you can open and inspect. Path of Exile's decade-deep ladder puts thousands of them in front of you to learn from. These guides read that listing on its own terms, separate from Path of Exile 2, so the tree, gear and cost you study match the game you are playing.
Where this sits
This is the Path of Exile half of the Games hub. Everything below is written for the original game. Path of Exile 2 has a far smaller ladder, so its listing is thinner and lives in the PoE 2 character listing guides.

What you are readingRead these in order and a stranger's character turns into your own plan. Each is written for Path of Exile specifically.
Open a real ladder character and read its tree, gear and gems in five passes, then find the version you can actually afford.
Check whether your own character clears the cutoff to appear in the listing at all, before you go looking for it.
What counts as one character, and which characters never enter the count, so you know what the listing is a sample of.
Why the characters you can browse skew toward the heavily funded top, and how to read past the money.
Import any character you find here and read it in full detail, then test changes before you spend a thing.
The character listing is the set of individual ladder characters that the rankings are built from. Where a ranking tells you how many people play a build, the listing lets you open a single one of them and see exactly how it is put together: the passive tree, the gear with its real modifiers, the gem links, and the stats it all produces. It is the ground truth beneath the summary, and the best learning resource the whole site has.
Path of Exile's ladder is deep, which is a genuine gift. With thousands of visible characters, almost any build you are curious about has been played and documented by someone ahead of you, often at several different budgets. The trap is treating the top of the list as normal.
The browsable characters skew wealthy
Only characters above the ladder cutoff are listed, so what you can browse leans toward the wealthy and the fully kitted. Read the expensive gear as a destination, not a starting kit, and look for the cheaper versions of the same build lower down. To see whether your own character would even appear, use the Eligibility Checker, and read why in why expensive builds dominate.
A short routine turns any listed character into something you can actually use.
Set the right league and game with the League Selector, since a Path of Exile 2 character tells you nothing here.
In the character listing, filter to your class and skill and pick a character close to where you are, not just the richest at the top.
Work through identity, main skill, keystones, defensive layers and the expensive items, the full method in the character listing guide.
Total what the setup really costs with the Build Cost Calculator before you commit to chasing any of it.
Load the character into Path of Building to read the real numbers and test your own changes.
This is the PoE 1 ladder, not PoE 2
Path of Exile 2 has a far smaller ladder, so its listing is a thinner sample and its gear costs read differently. A price or budget sense built here does not carry across. When you are playing the sequel, read the PoE 2 character listing guides instead, and use the Games hub to switch between them.
Because the games have separate ladders. A character, its gear and its cost from one tells you nothing reliable about the other, so keeping the guides split means the tree, items and prices you study match the game in front of you.
Not necessarily. High characters rank on level and funding as much as build quality, and the listing skews toward the wealthy. See how popularity is calculated and why expensive builds dominate.
Aim for it as a goal, not a starting point. Top characters are usually the best-funded, so read the expensive items as the ceiling and look for the cheaper version of the same build first.
Only if it clears the ladder cutoff in a public profile. Many characters never appear at all. The Eligibility Checker tells you whether yours would.
Yes. Export the character and import it into Path of Building to see the real numbers and test your own changes before spending anything.
