Path of Building is the calculator that sits underneath almost every build guide in Path of Exile, and learning to read it is the single biggest upgrade to how you judge a character. This guide covers all of it, from getting the right version and importing a build to reading its four panels, and then the part most guides skip: how to read its damage number without being fooled by it.
Where this sits
This is the deep version of the Path of Building section in the Build Guides hub, and the natural next step after reading the build rankings. If you only want the number checked, jump straight to the PoB Configuration Checklist.
Path of Building, usually shortened to PoB, is a free community tool that models a Path of Exile character in full: the passive tree, the gear, the gems, and the damage and defence it all produces. It is the standard way build guides share a complete setup, because a single import code carries the entire build into the tool for you to inspect, edit and learn from. It is not made by Grinding Gear Games, and it does not touch the game itself. It reads and calculates, nothing more.
What PoB is
What PoB is not
There is one detail worth getting right before you download anything. The version to use is the actively maintained community edition, which is kept current with new leagues and patches. Older, abandoned builds of the tool exist and will give you stale or wrong results, so make sure whatever you install is the one still being updated. It runs as a free desktop application, and shared build codes can also be viewed in a browser through community viewers when you just want a quick look rather than a full install.
Every build guide worth following gives you an import code. Bringing it into PoB is quick, and the third step is the one people skip and later regret.
Grab the build's code from the guide, usually a share link or a long pasted string.
Open the Import tab in Path of Building and paste the code. The whole build loads in one go, tree, gear, gems and all.
Before you read a single number, open Config and match it to the fight you actually care about. The PoB Configuration Checklist shows you exactly what to set and what to switch off.
Almost everything in PoB lives in one of four panels. Knowing what each is for turns an intimidating wall of numbers into a build you can actually understand.
The passive tree the build takes. Read it for the keystones and notable clusters that define the character, and for how much it invests in life and defence versus damage.
The equipped gear. Read it for the chase items the build leans on and the specific modifiers that matter, and note which pieces are cheap staples and which are the expensive heart of it.
The gem links. Read it for the main skill and the supports around it, plus the aura, movement and utility setup that quietly makes the build function.
The full damage and defence breakdown. Read it for where the damage actually comes from and which lines are doing the heavy lifting, so you know what to protect and what to improve.
The single most important tab, and the one most people never touch, is Config. This is where the conditions behind the headline number are set: whether the enemy is a boss, whether it is shocked and cursed, whether your charges and flasks and buffs are all running. Change nothing and PoB assumes a generous best case. That is exactly why a build's damage can look enormous and then feel small in the fight you bought it for.
Read the number honestly
Set a boss target and switch off any condition you cannot sustain against a lone enemy, then read the number that survives. That is the figure worth planning around. Run the build's conditions through the PoB Configuration Checklist and it will tell you which ones are inflating the displayed damage and defence.
Reading a guide's build is only half of what PoB is for. The real power is editing. Swap an item, move a few passive points, change a support gem, and the numbers update instantly, so you can see the exact cost of a change before you spend a single Divine on it. This is how you work out whether that expensive upgrade is worth it, or whether a cheaper alternative gets you most of the way for a fraction of the price. Used this way, PoB pays for the time it takes to learn many times over.
PoB is not only for other people's builds. You can import your own character straight from your account, provided your profile is public, and see the real numbers your current gear produces. That turns it into an upgrade planner. Compare your character against the guide you followed, spot where you fall short, and test each potential improvement in the tool before you go shopping for it in the character listing or on the market.
For all its precision, PoB has honest limits. It models the game rather than playing it, so some complex interactions are approximated rather than exact, and it cannot account for your reactions, your movement, or the mechanics of a fight you have to dodge. A build that calculates beautifully can still feel awful to play, and only time in game tells you which. Treat PoB as the best possible preview, then confirm the build where it counts, on your own screen.
Path of Exile 2 has its own version of Path of Building in progress, separate from the original and still maturing, so expect rough edges and check that you are using a build meant for the right game. Everything in this guide still applies. The panels do the same jobs, Config still decides the honesty of the number, and testing in game is still the final word. Just be sure the code you import and the tool you open are both for Path of Exile 2.
Path of Building is one part of reading a build well. These pick up the rest.
Turns the Config tab into a plain-language honesty check.
Finding a build to import in the first place.
The whole builds workflow, rankings through comparison.
Displayed DPS, effective health and every other term, defined.
Use the actively maintained community version, which is free and kept current with each league and patch. Avoid older abandoned builds of the tool, since they give stale or wrong results.
It is a widely used community tool that reads publicly available character and game data and does not interact with the game client, so it does not automate play. It calculates, it does not touch your account.
Almost always the Config tab. The default settings assume many ideal conditions at once. Set a boss target and turn off what you cannot sustain, using the PoB checklist, and the number drops to something realistic.
Yes, straight from your account as long as your profile is public. That lets you see your real numbers and test upgrades before buying them, which is one of the most useful things PoB does.
There is a separate version for Path of Exile 2 that is still maturing, so expect some rough edges. The same reading applies, but make sure both the tool and the imported build are meant for the right game.
This is an independent educational guide to using Path of Building and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Grinding Gear Games or the Path of Building project.
