Percentage changes are not symmetrical, and almost everyone treats them as though they are. A price that falls by half has not moved the same distance as a price that rises by half. It has moved considerably further, because the drop is measured against the old price and the recovery is measured against the new one.
That sounds like arithmetic pedantry until you are the one holding the item. Here is the same fact laid out properly.
This is the one that quietly costs people the most, and it is specific to an economy with two active currencies. Your item is priced in chaos. Your sense of being richer is measured in divine. Those two things can move in opposite directions at once.
An item goes from 100 chaos to 120 chaos. That is a twenty percent gain and it feels like one. But over the same window the divine rate went from 200 chaos to 260. In divine terms the item went from 0.50 to 0.46 — a loss of about eight percent, despite every number on the screen going up.
What happened is that chaos depreciated faster than your item appreciated. You did not gain purchasing power; you just held something that fell slightly less than the currency it was priced in. If your goal is a divine-priced upgrade, you are further from it than you were.

A change figure is history. It describes a distance already travelled and carries no information about what happens next. The instinct to read a rising line as a reason to buy is exactly backwards: by the time a move is visible in a summary, the people who caused it have already acted.
What it is genuinely good for is sanity checking a trade you are about to make. If someone is quoting you a price that sits well outside the recent range, the change figure tells you that before you agree to it.
A twelve percent move on an item with four thousand listings is a market shifting. The same twelve percent on an item with nine listings is two people changing their minds. The percentage looks identical either way, which is precisely the problem.
Week one moves are enormous and mean almost nothing, because supply is arriving faster than demand can absorb it. The same percentage in week eight, in a settled economy, describes something real that has actually changed. Identical number, entirely different signal.
Most large moves have a reason attached: a patch, a new crafting method, a build going viral, a boss becoming more or less farmable. If you cannot name the cause, you are not reading a trend. You are reading a fluctuation and hoping.
It has no price data. It does not know what anything is worth, cannot see the market, and has no opinion about whether a move will continue. Every number comes from you, and the result is exactly as good as those inputs.
It also cannot tell you the thing you most want to know, which is whether to buy or sell. Nothing can. What it can do is stop you from mistaking a twenty percent gain for actually being better off, which is a smaller claim and a considerably more honest one.
