That big damage figure at the top of a build is not a lie, but it is a fantasy. It is the number your build produces when everything is going right at once: every buff active, every flask up, every charge stacked, the enemy shocked and cursed and standing still, all at the same moment and lasting forever. Real fights are not like that. The headline figure is the ceiling of what your build can do in a perfect instant, not the floor of what it reliably does across a fight.

The single most useful question you can ask a damage number is whether you can keep it up. A figure you can hit for two seconds once every fifteen is not your damage, it is your peak. What clears a fight is what you sustain across it: the damage you deal while dodging, repositioning, waiting on cooldowns, and losing the odd charge or flask. A build with a lower peak and near-total uptime will out-perform a higher one that only lands its number in a rare perfect window.

A dead character deals zero damage
Damage is not even the stat that usually decides a fight. Survival is. The highest-DPS build is often the one that dies before it can use the number, and a modest build that lives comfortably will clear content the glass cannon cannot. The test is not whether the number is large. It is whether you can actually produce it when it counts, and whether your survival holds while you do. When both are true, high DPS earns its place. When they are not, it is just a pretty number.
