Four chapters following a single price from the currency it is measured in, through how it gets calculated, to the ways it gets misread in a trade window.
Path of Exile has no shops, no vendors worth using and no fixed prices. Everything is worth what another player will pay, which makes the economy genuinely interesting and genuinely difficult to read. A price on a tracker looks like a fact. It is closer to a weather forecast: assembled from a lot of observations, broadly reliable, and wrong in specific ways you can learn to anticipate.
These four chapters follow one number through its whole life. Read in order they build on each other. Read individually they still stand up.
Before a price can mean anything, you need to know what it is measured in — and that unit is itself an item whose value moves.
Currency in Path of Exile is not money. Every orb is a crafting item first, with a genuine use, and its trade value comes from that use rather than from anyone declaring it a unit of account. What happens in practice is that one common orb becomes the thing everything else is quoted against, because it is plentiful enough to make change with and useful enough that everyone wants some.
That gives you a rough hierarchy. Small trades happen in a base currency, large trades in something higher up, and an exchange rate sits between them that moves constantly.
How purchases sort themselves by size
Chaos orbs in Path of Exile, exalted orbs in Path of Exile 2. Plentiful, divisible, and the unit almost everything cheap is quoted in. If a price has no unit attached, it is almost certainly this one.
Divine orbs in both games. Anything expensive is priced here because base-currency totals become unwieldy strings that stop conveying anything. The rate between base and divine is the single most important number in the economy.
Mirrors and equivalents. So scarce that the listed value describes a handful of trades rather than a market, and so rarely exchanged that the figure can sit unchanged for days while the real price moves.
The rate is not a conversion convenience. It is the thing that decides whether your week was profitable. An item that goes from 100 base to 120 base looks like a twenty percent gain, but if the divine rate moved from 200 to 260 over the same window, the item actually lost value in divine terms.
The practical habit is small: check the current rate before any significant trade, and check it again if a session has passed. Early in a league it can shift meaningfully within a day.
Full currency guideEvery displayed value is the survivor of a filtering process. Knowing what got removed tells you how much to trust what is left.
Prices come from public stash tabs. When a player marks a tab for sale, its contents and asking prices become public data, and that is what every economy tracker reads. Which means the first thing to internalise is this: displayed values are asking prices, not sale prices.
Nobody records what anything actually sold for. An item listed at a ludicrous price by someone who never logs in again still counts as a data point, which is exactly why the filtering exists.
Statistical outliers go first, in both directions. So do obvious price-fixing attempts, where someone lists many copies far below market to manipulate the displayed figure. What remains is reduced to one representative value per item, per variant, per league.
That process is what makes the number useful. It is also what makes it a summary rather than an offer, and summaries can only be as good as the pile they were computed from.
This is the most useful thing on any economy page and the most widely ignored. A value backed by four thousand listings and a value backed by nine look identical on screen. They are not remotely the same claim.
Under roughly twenty listings, treat the figure as a handful of opinions rather than a market rate. Above a few hundred, it is genuinely descriptive of what the market is doing. Read the count before you read the value and most pricing mistakes disappear.
Two entries with the same name at different prices are not an error. Corruption outcomes, roll ranges, league-specific versions and quality tiers all change what something is worth, sometimes by a factor of ten. Blending them into one average would produce a number describing none of them.
Full item prices guideThe line behind a price is a record of where it has been. Reading it as a forecast is the most common expensive habit in the game.
Most items follow a recognisable arc across a league, and knowing the shape is worth more than watching any individual graph. The same percentage move means completely different things depending on which part of the arc you are standing in.
By the time a move is visible in a summary, the people who caused it have already acted. Reading a rising line as a reason to buy is exactly backwards, and it is the single most reliable way to buy at the top.
What history is genuinely good for is sanity checking a trade in front of you. If someone quotes a figure well outside the recent range, the graph tells you before you agree to it.
Three questions settle it almost every time. How many listings sit behind the figure — a twelve percent move on nine listings is two people changing their minds. Where are you in the league — week one moves are enormous and meaningless. And can you name the cause? If you cannot point to a patch, a crafting change or a build going viral, you are reading a fluctuation and hoping.

Everything above is about understanding a figure. This chapter is about the moment after — the trade window is open, someone is waiting, and the reasoning gets compressed into about four seconds. Almost all trading mistakes happen there, not in the research.
Four errors are behavioural rather than informational, which is why no amount of data prevents them.
