Aggregate tree data looks like a map of what works. Most of what it shows is geography — nodes people passed through on the way somewhere else. Here is how to separate the two, on a sample this thin.

This page is about reading tree data, not about which tree to take. We do not publish build recommendations, because a passive tree only makes sense alongside gear, gems and playstyle we cannot see. What we can do is explain what an allocation percentage actually measures — and it is not what it appears to.

What aggregate tree data is

When a tracker reads sampled characters, it can record which passive nodes each one has allocated. Combine those and you get a share per node: this percentage of characters took this point. Rendered over the tree, it produces a heatmap of where people went.

That is genuinely interesting, and it is one of the most misread things on any analytics platform — because a node's share is driven by two completely different forces that the number does not distinguish.

Most high percentages are geography

The tree is a graph. To reach anything, you spend points on the nodes between you and it. Those in-between points get allocated by nearly everybody heading that direction, which makes them look overwhelmingly popular.

The 96% node tells you almost nothing. The 31% keystone tells you a great deal. One is a corridor everyone walks down; the other is a decision somebody made on purpose. Allocation share does not distinguish between them, so you have to.

A heatmap of the tree is mostly a map of routes. The interesting part is where the routes stop and the choices begin.

A hierarchy of what actually carries information

Not all tree data is equally meaningful. Ranked from most to least informative, which is close to the reverse of how the percentages are usually read.

Keystones

Nobody allocates one by accident. A keystone is a deliberate detour with a real cost and usually a real downside, so every point of its share represents a decision somebody made on purpose.

Even at a modest percentage, keystone data is the most informative thing on a tree overview.

Notables away from the obvious route

A significant node that requires travelling out of your way is a choice with a price attached. When many characters pay it, that is evidence of something.

The test is simple: would you pass through here anyway? If not, its share means something.

Where two routes diverge

A branch point where characters split shows a genuine trade-off being resolved differently by different people. The ratio is the interesting number, not either side's absolute share.

The 90-plus percentages. These describe the shape of the tree rather than anything about builds, and reading them as endorsements is the single most common tree-data mistake.

They also make a heatmap look far more decisive than the underlying evidence is.

The thin sample makes all of this worse

Everything above applies to both games. What makes it sharper here is that the sample underneath these percentages is a thousand characters, and it shrinks fast once you filter to a class.

The same filter here. A keystone at 20% is around 28 characters — interesting, and comfortably within the range one popular video could produce.

So the reading discipline from the build guides page applies directly: convert the percentage into a headcount before forming an impression, and open individual characters rather than trusting the aggregate. On a tree overview that is even more important, because a heatmap presents thin data with enormous visual confidence.

The tree itself is still moving

Path of Exile 2 is being balanced, and passive nodes are part of that. A node that was popular last patch may have been changed, moved or removed, and a route that everybody took can stop existing.

Which means tree data has a shorter shelf life here than almost anything else on an analytics platform. A price from last week is stale; a tree consensus from before a passive rework is describing a tree that no longer exists.

Before acting on any tree overview, check when the last balance patch landed. If it was recent, the data is a blend of characters built before and after the change, which is worse than either alone.

Reading a tree overview properly

Filter to your class first Tree data pooled across classes is meaningless, because starting position determines most of it. A node near one class's start is unreachable early for another.

Ignore everything above about 85 percent Those are corridors. They tell you where your class starts and where the tree lets you walk, which you can see by looking at the tree.

Read the keystones first, then the notables Start with the decisions that cost something. A keystone list is a far better summary of what a class is actually doing than any heatmap.

Look for the branch points Where the population splits, there is a real trade-off. Those are the decisions worth understanding, and the ones a guide usually glosses over.

Open three characters and compare their trees directly The same habit that works everywhere else on this data. Whatever all three allocated is the build; whatever one allocated is that player's preference. See comparing builds properly.

Check the patch date before trusting any of it Tree data ages faster than prices here. A consensus formed before a rework describes a tree that has since changed.

What a tree overview cannot tell you

Not in this data

  • Whether a node is good. Only that people allocated it. Those are different claims, and popularity has never been evidence of quality.
  • What order to take things in. A finished tree is a destination. It says nothing about which points to spend first, which is most of the actual decision while levelling.
  • Why anyone took a node. A keystone might be load-bearing for the build or might be a habit copied from a guide. The data records the choice, never the reasoning.
  • Whether it works without the gear. Trees are built alongside items. Copying an allocation without what justified it frequently produces a worse character than a simpler tree would.
  • Whether it suits how you play. No allocation percentage captures whether a build feels good to press, and plenty of numerically sound trees get abandoned in three days.

Which brings this back to the same place as every other page on this site. Aggregate data is evidence, not instruction — and on a tree, where the presentation is a confident-looking heatmap over a thousand-character sample, the gap between those two things is unusually easy to forget. That habit, and the ones it belongs to, are collected in common mistakes.
